Mitchell Arliss Race III was a Human physician, an officer in Starfleet, and a member of the Alpha Centauri Institue. Born on Earth, in Illinois, Dr. Race was the son of legendary Task Force Fontana founder Commodore Mitchell Race II.

Dr. Race studied at the University of New London Medical School, including a period of time with the Vulcan Science Academy under an exchange program. He graduated from Starfleet Academy in 2398 as the recipient of the Wilson Class Award for his paper titled "Symbiosis Applied," and he was ranked 7th overal in his medical class, 40th overall at the Academy. After graduation he was assigned to various starships, including the USS Horizon, USS Carl Sagan, and USS J Allen Hynek.

Dr. Race often said that he was "born with scientific exploration in my blood and an unstoppable desire to cure disease and sickness." In the year 2399, continuing his studies aboard the USS HORIZON, Race developed a new high-resolution portable scanning device using a Farlonium power source and an ambient flux inhibitor. In 2403, just before Race's transfer to the combat science vessel, USS Carl Sagan, the “Arless Scanner” was used to find a new mineral stream on a Class K world near Beta Signi. Medicine created from the mineral saved the lives of over 20,000 people on Vetos IV. And, in 2404 Dr. Mitchell Arless Race became the youngest nominee of the coveted Carrington Award. In 2405, the same scanner was used to diagnose a rare Trillian disorder called Rularian Symbiosis Complex (RSC), a disease the effects the synaptic connections between Trill host and symbiont (for any Trill host who had visited the planet Rular IV in the past 32 years). The scanner is now being used to catalog and refine diagnosis for over 32 other Trillian diseases.

In 2409, Race was attacked, tortured, and severly mutilated by the Keskian Grom during events surrounding The Hexagon Action. The trauma of the experience lead to his retirment from Starfleet and the ACI.
